    Charge transfer mechanism and Tc(x) dependence in Y0.8(Ca)0.2Ba2Cu3O6+x

    We propose a model for charge transfer mechanism in Y0.8(Ca)0.2Ba2Cu3O6+x to count hole doping of CuO2 planes and x dependence of critical transition temperature T_c. It is assumed the total number of doped holes in the planes is sum of holes that are introduced through two separate channels: substitution of Y3+ by Ca2+ and from CuO chains that are longer than a minimal (critical) length l_min needed for charge transfer to take place. The T_c(x) dependence is obtained by combining calculated x dependence of doping, p(x), and universal T_c versus p relation. Although calculated T_c(x) dependences for l_min=3 and l_min=4 both remarkably correlate to the experimental T_c(x), we argue that the value l_min=4 gives a reasonable overall agreement.Comment: Four pages of text, 2 figures, corrected typing error in abstract: Y2+ and Ca3+ replaced by Y3+ and Ca2+.     A Simple Signal Shaper for GMSK/GFSK and MSK Modulator Based on Sigma-Delta Look-up Table

    Due to wide power spectrums of rectangular data streams, it is important for base-band signals to be heavily band limited before modulation. That can be achieved by pulse shaping of rectangular bits. Some of the most common are a half-sine pulse shaper and a Gaussian pulse shaper which are used in Minimum Shift Keying (MSK), Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) and Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK) modulations, respectively. The most common solutions of such shapers use PCM based look-up-table (LUT), which requires an nbit D/A converter. We proposed the use of a 1-bit Sigma Delta Modulation (SDM) LUT, which results in smaller ROM capacity, a 1-bit wide output word, and a simple1-bit D/A converter realized as an out-of-chip first-order lowpass RC filter, or an in-chip charge pump. This article describes a simple, but efficient SDM LUT-based half-sine and Gaussian shaper that can be used for generation of MSK and GMSK/GFSK modulated signals.     This paper analyzes the performance of the hybrid Amplitude Shape Modulation (h-ASM) scheme for the time-hopping ultra-wideband (TH-UWB) communication systems in the single and multi-user environment. h-ASM is the combination of Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) and Pulse Shape Modulation (PSM) based on modified Hermite pulses (MHP). This scheme is suitable for high rate data transmission applications because b = log2(MN) bits can be mapped with one waveform. The channel capacity and error probability over AWGN channel are derived and compared with other modulation schemes

    A role for TSPO in mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis and redox stress signaling

    The 18 kDa translocator protein TSPO localizes on the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM). Systematically overexpressed at sites of neuroinflammation it is adopted as a biomarker of brain conditions. TSPO inhibits the autophagic removal of mitochondria by limiting PARK2-mediated mitochondrial ubiquitination via a peri-organelle accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Here we describe that TSPO deregulates mitochondrial Ca2+ signaling leading to a parallel increase in the cytosolic Ca2+ pools that activate the Ca2+-dependent NADPH oxidase (NOX) thereby increasing ROS. The inhibition of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake by TSPO is a consequence of the phosphorylation of the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC1) by the protein kinase A (PKA), which is recruited to the mitochondria, in complex with the Acyl-CoA binding domain containing 3 (ACBD3). Notably, the neurotransmitter glutamate, which contributes neuronal toxicity in age-dependent conditions, triggers this TSPO-dependent mechanism of cell signaling leading to cellular demise. TSPO is therefore proposed as a novel OMM-based pathway to control intracellular Ca2+ dynamics and redox transients in neuronal cytotoxicity

    A comparison of spectral decorrelation techniques and performance evaluation metrics for a wavelet-based, multispectral data compression algorithm

    Future space-based, remote sensing systems will have data transmission requirements that exceed available downlinks necessitating the use of lossy compression techniques for multispectral data. In this paper, we describe several algorithms for lossy compression of multispectral data which combine spectral decorrelation techniques with an adaptive, wavelet-based, image compression algorithm to exploit both spectral and spatial correlation. We compare the performance of several different spectral decorrelation techniques including wavelet transformation in the spectral dimension. The performance of each technique is evaluated at compression ratios ranging from 4:1 to 16:1. Performance measures used are visual examination, conventional distortion measures, and multispectral classification results. We also introduce a family of distortion metrics that are designed to quantify and predict the effect of compression artifacts on multi spectral classification of the reconstructed data

    Aligning daily activities with personality: towards a recommender system for improving wellbeing

    Recommender Systems have not been explored to a great extentfor improving health and subjective wellbeing. Recent advances inmobile technologies and user modelling present the opportunityfor delivering such systems, however the key issue is understand-ing the drivers of subjective wellbeing at an individual level. Inthis paper we propose a novel approach for deriving personalizedactivity recommendations to improve subjective wellbeing by maxi-mizing the congruence between activities and personality traits. Toevaluate the model, we leveraged a rich dataset collected in a smart-phone study, which contains three weeks of daily activity probes,the Big-Five personality questionnaire and subjective wellbeingsurveys. We show that the model correctly infers a range of activ-ities that are ’good’ or ’bad’ (i.e. that are positively or negativelyrelated to subjective wellbeing) for a given user and that the derivedrecommendations greatly match outcomes in the real-world
